Si, e’ proprio cosi’, l’ananas è stato per molto tempo il cibo dei ricchi e simbolo massimo di opulenza, addirittura veniva dato in affitto per realizzare prima dei quadri e successivamente delle fotografie da mostrare ai conoscenti.

È proprio vero! L’ananas ha avuto una storia affascinante, legata a ricchezza, lusso e status sociale. Per secoli, questo frutto esotico era considerato un bene prezioso, accessibile solo alle élite.
L’ananas, originario delle Americhe, dove era coltivato già in epoca precolombiana fu introdotto nel Vecchio Continente dagli esploratori europei, come Cristoforo Colombo, gia’ dopo il 1500.
La sua rarità e il gusto esotico lo resero subito un oggetto di grande desiderio tra le classi abbienti e simbolo di opulenza. L’ananas divenne rapidamente un simbolo di ricchezza e status social e veniva spesso esposto durante banchetti e feste. La sua presenza era tale che persino i reali se ne vantavano. Ad esempio, il re di Francia Luigi XIV ne possedeva una speciale serra dedicata alla sua coltivazione.
La rarità dell’ananas (ed il suo prezzo) era tale che, in alcuni casi, veniva addirittura affittato. Le famiglie benestanti lo noleggiavano per poche ore per poterlo esporre durante le loro feste e immortalarlo in quadri e fotografie da mostrare agli presenti come simbolo del loro prestigio sociale.
Per fortuna, venne in aiuto la spinta derivata dalla domanda di mercato e con il tempo, grazie a nuove tecniche di coltivazione e a una migliore distribuzione, l’ananas divenne gradualmente più accessibile. La svolta arrivò nel XIX secolo con la costruzione di serre in Europa e la scoperta di nuove piantagioni nelle isole del Pacifico. La produzione aumentò considerevolmente, facendo scendere il prezzo e rendendo il frutto disponibile a un pubblico più ampio.
E poi inevitabilmente arriva l’industrializzazione ed il marketing e in accordo con la legge sulla domanda che stabilisce che c’è una relazione inversa (o negativa) tra prezzo e quantità domandata. La quantità domandata di un bene aumenta al diminuire del prezzo ed infatti il massimo delle vendite dell’ananas si ebbe con l’invenzione della macchina per sbucciare l’ananas nei primi anni del 1900 e la messa a punto della lattina di metallo ermetica. Questo nuovo metodo di conservazione permise di conservare gli alimenti in modo più sicuro e duraturo, aprendo la strada alla commercializzazione su larga scala anche dell’ananas.
Oggi l’ananas è un alimento comune che possiamo trovare facilmente fresco nei supermercati di tutto il mondo e anche se l’ananas non è più un simbolo di lusso sfrenato, conserva ancora un certo fascino esotico. La sua forma particolare e il suo colore vivace lo rendono un elemento decorativo della tavola.
Ma, ci deve sempre essere un ma, ci troviamo di fronte alla pizza con l’ananas conosciuta anche come pizza hawaiana, variante controversa e dibattuta del celebre piatto italiano.
Questa pizza (?) nasce dall’unione di due sapori apparentemente contrastanti: la dolcezza dell’ananas e la salinità della pizza. Questa variante ha guadagnato popolarità anche sui social media, dove spesso scatena accese discussioni (al pari del tea british, con il limone o il latte?). Il suo status di cibo controverso la rende un argomento perfetto per generare engagement e dibattito online e volenti o nolenti rappresenta una delle varianti di pizza più popolari in Canada e in alcuni paesi del Nord Europa (e presente nel menu di diverse catene di pizzerie internazionali).

Una curiosità: la corona di foglie dell’ananas, se piantata, può far nascere una nuova pianta. Un modo per far vivere ancora più a lungo la magia di questo frutto esotico!
